The Ninety-Nines, Inc.
International Organization of Women Pilots
The Ninety-Nines is the international organization of women pilots that promotes advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support while honoring our unique history and sharing our passion for flight.
On November 2, 1929 at Curtiss Field, Valley Stream, Long Island, New York; 99 women pilots out of the 117 registered American female pilots met and decided to organize a group for women pilots for mutual support and the advancement of aviation. For the next few years Louise Thaden worked to keep the group together and grow. In 1931 Amelia Earhart was elected as the first president and the group was named for the for the 99 charter members. Today, The Ninety-Nines, Inc., International Organization of Women Pilots, are represented in all areas of aviation today. And, to quote Amelia, fly “for the fun of it!”
